MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, NEW YORK, NY- Reggaeton duo Plan B sold out Madison Square Garden last night and did not disappoint. Gilberto and I attended the event together anticipating a good show. There have been other reggaeton concerts I have had the opportunity to be a part of, but the concert arena was renovated after my last visit to MSG, so this felt like a brand-new experience.
The opening acts were dembow artists Secreto El Mayor and El Alfa from the Dominican Republic. Each artist had their entertaining set while the seats filled up. Also hyping up the crowd were La Mega’s 97.9 FM top DJs: Alex Sensation, DJ Lobo, and DJ Camilo. The arena transformed into a giant night club when one of those three took over the turntables.
Plan B opened their show with classics “Guatauba”, “Frikitona”, “Hooka”, “Tuve Un Sueño”, and “Ella Se Contradice”. It wasn’t long before they brought out their first guests: Alexis y Fido. Los Reyes del Perreo brought their energy to the stage collaborating with Plan B on “El Matadero”. Alexis y Fido had their solo and got the crowd dancing to hits such as “Ojos Que No Ven”, “Energia”, “Rescate”, and “5 Letras”.
Plan B returned to the stage for their next set of hits. A battle of the sexes was on with a call and response game. “Porque Te Demoras”, “Parisera”, and “Te Dijeron” was performed before J. Alvarez walked on the stage to join them for “Juegas Con Mi Mente”. J. Alvarez had his moment to shine performing “El Amante”, “Como Yo Le Doy”, and “Junto Al Amanecer”.
With new outfits, Plan B got the crowd dancing and singing along to “Es Un Secreto”, “Choca”, and “Zapatito Roto”. During “Si No Le Contesto”, Tony Dize made his appearance. He collaborated with Plan B on “Solos” before his individual performances of “Quizas” and “Hasta Verla Si Na”.
Another change of clothes and Plan B returned. “A Que No Te Atreves” was performed by Chenco before they brought out one of the biggest guest stars of the night: Daddy Yankee! “Sabado Rebelde” woke the arena up. Daddy Yankee proved he is still the big boss of reggaeton while Plan B handled another outfit change. He performed some of his underground hits like “Muerto En El Funeral” before going into a dope freestyle.
Plan B was not satisfied with having only having Daddy Yankee on stage with them. Arcangel joined the trio as well. The four of them took the crowd down memory lane with went into underground classics before Arcangel was left by himself to entertain the crowd with “Me Prefieres A Mi”.
El Duo del Sex had one more surprise in their deck of cards. Tempo appeared during their performance of “Candy”. I was not expecting to see Tempo at this concert, and I am glad to see him finally free from prison.
Plan B concluded their concert with “Mi Vecinita” and “Fanatical Sensual” before disappearing from the stage. Considering Plan B’s reputation for being El Due del Sex, a sold-out concert at MSG was long overdue for them. Their music is not appropriate for younger audiences, but they made history last night. That speaks volumes, especially since the reggaeton genre has had its obstacles over the past few years.
